Ways to Give

June is African Penguin Month!

This month, we shine a spotlight on our beloved African Penguins. Once thriving in the millions, fewer than 45,000 African penguins are in the wild today. The biggest threats African penguins face in the wild are habitat loss and wildlife trafficking. Overfishing off the coast of South Africa has diminished available food, and plastic pollution in our ocean causes life-threatening injuries to a wide range of wildlife, including African penguins. Their survival is in our hands.

These extraordinary beings, the African Penguins, are perfectly adapted for the water. They possess the remarkable ability to hold their breath for up to 2 minutes and dive to depths of over 400 feet. Despite their small stature, each African penguin can consume a substantial pound of fish per day.

Ross Park Zoo is the proud home to a colony of eight African penguins, led by our active breeding pair, Howard and Adasha.  The monthly cost to care for one of our African penguins is $65. Annually, it costs more than $6,000 to care for our colony of eight penguins. Your contribution to our Animal Care Fund is crucial. It will directly help cover the expenses for providing enrichment, food, and veterinary care for the animals who call the Ross Park Zoo home, like our African penguins.
