Holiday Appeal

This holiday season, we’re asking you to give the gift of care to the animals. The Ross Park Zoo has seen unprecedented losses in revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But one thing hasn’t changed…the cost and care for every single animal.

Take for example, our colony of 7 African penguins, all with mighty appetites and a daily care routine from the animal care staff that demands two to three hours to maintain. Over the course of a year, they eat approximately $3,500 worth of herring and capelin, types of fish that provide them with the daily nutrients they need. Animal care staff cleans the indoor and outdoor habitat, preps their diet, gives enrichment, and provides other routine care (yearly, that adds up to over $10,000 in staff costs!). Then there’s vet services starting at $2,300 per year and habitat upkeep valuing $5,000. That’s an overall bill of approximately $20,300 a year…just for the penguins!

The bottom line? $576,000 is needed to take care of our entire collection for one year. Your donation this holiday season can assist the zoo with the high level of veterinary care, enrichment, and programs needed to maintain these rare species. Every dollar makes a difference during these uncertain times.

Please consider making an annual gift or monthly pledge. We appreciate your support of the Ross Park Zoo, and we hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season!
