Remarkable Reptiles: Celebrating National Reptile Awareness Day

Remarkable Reptiles: Celebrating National Reptile Awareness Day

October 21st is a special day for reptiles as it is National Reptile Awareness Day!

We celebrate this day to educate and inform the public about these often underappreciated cold-blooded vertebrates. Many people love to have these animals as pets but they require an immense amount of involved care in order to properly care for them where they can thrive in their environment. A lot of species require a complex level of care including a specialized diet, maintaining a certain level of heat, as well as a specific percentage of humidity. All of which can be hard to acquire and expensive to maintain.

Here are some reptiles that call Ross Park Zoo home:

  • African spurred tortoise
  • Green tree python
  • Mali uromastyx
  • Red-footed tortoise
  • Yellow-footed tortoise

Every day we celebrate our reptiles here at the Zoo while providing them with appropriate care and an environment where they can thrive. This National Reptile Awareness Day I encourage you to choose a reptile species and learn more about them! Maybe it’s one that may seem a little scary or maybe it is one of your favorites but by taking the time to understand the species, learn some of the extraordinary aspects and adaptations, you begin to grow a great appreciation for them and gain the realization of the important role that they play in our ecosystems!
