Safeguarding the Sands: Saving Fennec Foxes

Safeguarding the Sands: Saving Fennec Foxes

Each month here at Ross Park Zoo, we choose one of the species who is our feature for the month where we highlight their story and promote the initiatives that are in place to do what we can to save their species. This August, we are delighted to shine a spotlight on the enchanting Fennec Fox!

At Ross Park Zoo, we proudly house two Fennec Foxes named Calliope and Sayid. What is special about the two of them is that they are an ambassador for their species, especially Calliope! Calliope is most recognizable by the fact that she only has one eye. That is how her story begins here at Ross Park Zoo.

Fennec Foxes are native to the Central Sahara Desert often found living in dens and extensive burrow systems. They are highly specialized to desert life and found almost exclusively in arid, sandy regions. Calliope however came to us as a result of a confiscation from an inappropriate environment that she was kept in.

There are countless species throughout the world who are taken from their homes and sold as pets. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is at the forefront of the “Not A Pet” Campaign, focusing on engaging and educating the public on the harm that the illegal pet trade imposes not only on individual species but their environment and even our own that they are brought into. Visit https://www.notapet.net/ to learn more information and what you can do to help combat wildlife trafficking!

By visiting AZA’s Not A Pet Campaign Website, you can explore ways to get involved and help protect species like the Fennec Fox from exploitation. Your actions matter in safeguarding their natural habitats and ensuring their survival for future generations.
